The Department

The Department of Animal Science is one of the pioneering academic departments of the College of Natural Resources, with its origins dating back to the establishment of the then Natural Resources Training Institute (NRTI) in 1992. The Department initially offered the Diploma in Animal Husbandry, which played a vital role in developing Bhutan’s livestock extension workforce for over two decades. Building on this strong foundation, the Department launched the Bachelor of Science in Animal Science programme in 2015, followed by the introduction of the nested degree programme in 2016. It also hosted the Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology programme before it grew into an independent department. Today, the Department continues to advance excellence in education, research, and professional service, producing graduates who contribute to sustainable livestock development, food security, and rural transformation in Bhutan.
